Do you prefer coffee or tea?

Coffee and tea are two of the most popular drinks in the world. Both contain caffeine, antioxidant, and can help you feel energized. Here are the basics on the similarities and differences between coffee and tea. From there, you can decide which drink is better for your health.

Coffee has more caffeine

Coffee and tea both contain caffeine, a stimulant that can keep you awake and energized.

In a 2015 study, people with moderate amounts of caffeine had a lower risk of type 2 diabetes than those who didn't. In addition, they also have a lower risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases - including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases - and cancers such as colon cancer, uterine cancer and liver cancer.

According to Dr. Christopher Gardner, director of nutritional research at the Stanford Center for Disease Control (USA), a cup of coffee usually contains 80 to 100mg of caffeine. Meanwhile, a cup of tea contains only 30 to 50mg of caffeine.

Matthew Chow, an associate professor of neurology at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, supports this claim. "In general, coffee has two to three times more caffeine than black tea," he said. "However, the exact ratio depends on several factors, such as the type of tea, the amount of tea used to make a cup, the temperature of the water, the length of time the tea is allowed to cool…”.

For example, black tea contains about 48mg of caffeine in one cup, while green tea contains only 29mg. Herbal teas like mint and chamomile tea are completely caffeine-free.

However, it is important that you do not consume too much caffeine. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends no more than 4-5 cups of coffee per day. Because too much caffeine can cause nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, anxiety and elevated heart rate, even seizures.

Everyone's tolerance to caffeine is different, so it's important to monitor your body's response and adjust accordingly.

Tea provides sustained energy and helps increase concentration

Since coffee contains more caffeine than tea, it provides an immediate sobering effect. However, tea helps increase energy in a more sustainable way than coffee.

That's because tea, unlike coffee, contains L-theanine (tanin), an amino acid that can metabolize caffeine over a long period of time. A 2008 study found that a combination of L-theanine and caffeine significantly increased concentration compared to those who consumed only caffeine. The study concluded that the combination of the two improved cognitive performance and attention.

Both green and black tea contain L-theanine, although green tea has slightly more, at about 6.56 mg in a cup, while black tea has only 5.13 mg.

Coffee contains more antioxidants

Both coffee and tea contain antioxidants - chemical compounds that may reduce the risk of certain diseases like cancer or diabetes.

"A 2013 study found that coffee contains more antioxidants than tea, hot chocolate and red wine," said Associate Professor Chow.

Common antioxidants in coffee include chlorogenic, ferulic, caffeic, and n-coumaric acids. Some experts even consider caffeine an antioxidant. A major component of green tea called catechins is also considered an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

The antioxidants in coffee or tea may be able to prevent or treat chronic degenerative diseases, such as stroke, cancer, diabetes and heart disease, Dr. Gardner said.

Just remember to drink coffee and tea in moderation for optimal antioxidant benefits, as drinking more than four or five cups a day can pose harmful health risks.

Expert advice

Associate Professor Chow concludes that it is hard to say which is better for tea or coffee, as that depends on your health and needs.

If you want to wake up quickly, the high caffeine content in coffee will help you get there in no time. However, if your body is sensitive to caffeine, you should drink tea because the caffeine content is lower and the tannins in tea help you maintain energy longer and more stable.
